Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which instruments do you teach?
I only offer piano tuition now.
  • Which exam boards to you prepare for?
    I only prepare for ABRSM.
  • Do I need a piano for piano lessons or can I use a keyboard?
The perfect resource is a well tuned, well maintained piano. A real piano will help you to feel how hard or gently you need to press the keys to create emotion and "dynamics". Keys on pianos are almost always a universal size as well.

Some keyboards are viable alternatives as long as they offer velocity sensitivity or semi-weighted keys and have at least 61 keys for early musicians or the full 88 keys for more advanced pupils.

Please do not rush out and buy a keyboard; I am very happy to discuss your expectations and requirements with you. I also run a loan service.
  • Do you offer theory lessons?
Yes I offer ABRSM theory lessons up to and including Grade 5. Online theory lessons are extremely effective and can be 1:1 or small group remotely. For more information contact me.
  • Can you come to my house for piano lessons?
Unfortunately not. I had slots where pupils could come to my house for lessons but this is not currently available due to the Covid-19 situation.
  • Can my child have lessons in school time at school with you?
I already support some local schools. With Covid-19 I have temporarily moved all my teaching online to maintain continuity. Thank you to all the parents who have given such positive feedback. Please contact me for more information.
  • What software/resources do you use for online lessons?
Currently I use Zoom for online piano video/audio lessons. It integrates seamlessly into my online booking system managed by youcanbook.me. Access to my online booking system is only possible by a password that I make personally available once parents have committed to my teaching support.

When I put up an available slot in my online diary, when someone books a slot Zoom automatically notifies me and creates an individual link for that lesson using the parent's email address. The booking is removed from the online diary and cannot be seen my anyone else unless that person reschedules or cancels the booking.
  • Is your software safe?
As with many other music teachers we use online services to deliver secure high quality music lessons.

I always make sure I use the latest operating system updates and app updates. I would encourage all of my parents to do the same to ensure the same security and safety of their children online to ensure that "end to end" connections are safe, encrypted and secure. The important message here is that both ends of the "chain" need to ensure they are using the same up to date software. This will ensure that I as a teacher and your children and you as recipients have a secure online experience.
